On your original question I'd say that the choice about asynchronous vs. synchronous depends on a lot of different variables. As a general rule, the lower down on Bloom's taxonomy the task you hope learners will master is, the more likely an asynchronous course will "work." But, you also have to consider the audience, the budget, development time and resources, etc. More to come!
